DENVER'S RELIGIOUS, PHILANTHROPIC AND BENEVOLENT
INSTITUTIONS
No city of its size in America excels Denver in the number of people who do not consider the Almighty Dollar the be-all and end-all, but who, heeding the calls of humanity, devote time, thought, and money to philanthropic and benevolent work in which there is no pecuniary reward. The number in Denver is legion of secret and other societies on general lines, in which the primary object is a provision for sickness and death, the income being provided by the monthly contributions of the members. For the care of the sick the three hospitals--St. Anthony's (conducted by the Sisters of St. Francis); St. Luke's (Protestant); and St. Joseph's (conducted by the Sisters of Charity), all occupying commodious buildings, are doing a noble work at cost, and in some cases at less than cost; as also is the Denver Homeopathic Hospital. The County Hospital, supported by public taxation, takes care of impecunious patients, and the Union Pacific Railway Hospital makes a specialty of railroad employes' accident cases. For a limited number of the ever increasing arrivals of semi-invalids of moderate means, attracted to Denver by the climate, there is accommodation at cost price in the magnificent "Home." |
