An Illustrated History of Monroe County, Iowa - published in 1896. A general history of Monroe County written by Frank Hickenlooper. Although some of the book is the typical "dry" history, there are some chapters that have a humorous twist to them, especially the ones that are describing pioneer life. All in all, a very enjoyable and informative book. It does not contain biographical sketches of citizens. It does have an extensive chapter on the Civil War and the regiments represented by Monroe County men, including a sketch of a rebel prison-pen by J. T. Young, who was there.
