Friday February 18, 1876

The most interesting topic of conversation at the Capital, says a Washington correspondent, is the marriage of Senator CHRISTIANCY, of Michigan, to Miss Lillie LUGERBEEL, of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing of the Treasury Department. The marriage took place at the boarding place of the young lady, where the Senator resides, and was a very quiet affair, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Dr. SUNDERLAND and witnessed by very few persons. Senator FERRY, who was the only Senator present, officiated as groomsman, and Miss Belle LINTHICUM as bridesmaid. After the wedding the couple took the cars for New York, where they will pass the first halcyon days of the honeymoon. The Senator, who has now reached the age of 64, lost his wife about nine months since. He is the father of six children. His wife is a blonde, quite pretty, and about 20 years of age. Their courtship was quite brief, lasting but a few weeks, the Senator having met his fate only since the present session of Congress. When the name of Mr. CHRISTIANCY was read, in calling the roll of the Senate this afternoon, Mr. FERRY, President pro tem., said with a sly twinkle: "I desire to state that my colleague is paired," a remark which created general laughter all over the Chamber. That the uninitiated may appreciate the joke, it may be stated that it is customary in the Senate when a vote is taken to pair off with some member on the opposite side who will not vote, so that his side may not lose by his absence.

A Wedding at a Donation or a Donation at a Wedding, "as you like it."

Last Wednesday evening there was a social gathering at the residence of Wm. Silas HAUSE, in the town of Handy, which is well worthy of mention in your newsy paper. It was a practical illustration of the old proverb of "killing two birds with one stone." We have heard of weddings on the highway, and under the chamber windows of the Country parsons, and at County fairs, But who ever heard of a wedding at a donation? And yet this was what we witnessed at the above mentioned time and place. The Donation was for the benefit of Rev. HATHEWAY, a Protestant Methodist, a minister who preaches at the White School House in the neighborhood. The Wedding was for the benefit of Mr. Charles BRUKMAN and Miss Allie CHURCH and Rev. D. E. HILL’S all of Handy. I never saw a private house so packed with people in my life. What the proceeds of the Donation were I did not learn but the Wedding was a success. May the bride and groom be surrounded by as great a crowd of friends all through life.

Friday April 11, 1879

It is with great pleasure that I take this opportunity of informing you of what is transpiring in this part of our town. Our Grange is prospering fairly and is regarded as a permanent institution. We held a meeting last evening of more than usual interest. Our brother, Robert SMITH, having become weary of the state of single blessedness concluded after mature deliberation to take unto himself a wife and our sister, Miss Hattie WARREN, being of the same mind and quite ready to enter the holy state of matrimony, they were accordingly married at our hall last evening, brother GIBERSON, of Conway, officiating as clergyman. A most sumptuous feast was served and the bride was the happy recipient of numerous presents consisting of articles both useful and ornamental. The couple start on their journey with many kind wishes. The printer was not forgotten and a cake was set apart for his especial benefit.

(As regards that cake it was "immense"-of the pyramid-monumental style of architecture bearing this inscription tastefully arranged: "Keep cool Bob." The happy couple have our thanks, best wishes, etc., etc.--Ed.)
