Company
C represents Petoskey, Gaylord, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs.
Two hundred and six rifle shots were recruited to pick this
company from. It is also an exceptionally well educated company,
its commissioned officers, sergeants, cook and some of its
privates being college men. This company afforded an
illustration of one of the paradoxes of army regulations, having
a man who was refused admittance on account of extreme height.
Captain
Albert E. McCabe of Petoskey was a member of several
different independent companies and captain of the Petoskey
Light Guard. He is a prominent lawyer of Petoskey of the
firm of Pailthorpe & McCabe and at the beginning of the
war offered the services of himself and company which is
made up entirely of sharpshooters.

LIEUT. FLAVEL J. SMITH |
First
Lieutenant Flavel J. Smith of Petoskey resigned as sheriff
of his county to accept a commission in this company. He is
an old campaigner, having served in the civil war, and has
all the requisites of a qualified officer.

LIEUT. IRVING B. BATES |
The
second lieutenant, Irving B. Bates of Port Huron, is a
graduate of the Michigan Agricultural College, and has been
captain of several independent companies. He is a thorough
drill master, fine tactician and was strongly recommended
for the lieutenancy.
