Company I, representing the Upper Peninsula, is a sturdy looking company
composed mainly of rugged woodsmen who are fine marksmen. It does
not include among its members a single married man. Special
dispensation was secured to muster in this company without its
captain.
Captain
Gilbert Scranton of Sault Ste. Marie was recalled from Cuba, where
he went as second lieutenant of Company G, 35th M. V. L, to accept
this command, for which he is a well fitted officer.

First
Lieutenant Charles H. Chapman is probate judge of Chippewa county.
At the early age of 18 he was a reporter on the Cincinnati
Commercial and afterwards published a paper at Pontiac. His home is
now at Sault Ste. Marie where he is a member of the Knights of
Pythias and a Knight Templar, in which organizations he has served
as lieutenant and captain. Lieutenant Chapman was also a member of
the Michigan National Guard.

Second
Lieutenant Charles W. Adkins of Manistique served several years in
the Illinois National Guard, is well versed in military tactics and
is an excellent officer.
