Memorial & Biographical Record
Butler, Polk, Seward, York & Fillmore Counties
Includes "Compendium of National Biographies" in the first portion,
which is followed by biographies for Nebraskans.Suspicious dates -
Patrick Henry ... "in March, 1789, he was elected state senator but did not take his seat on account of his death which occurred at Red Hill, Charlotte county, Virginia, June 6, 1799." Double-checked the dates as printed - and reproduced what the book stated!Mis-spelled &/or omitted -
The surname is sometimes different - not the same throughout the article. These, and the usual typos are marked with "(sic)". In one case, the man's birthdate was given but did NOT include the birthyear. We had the year from a different source. Have added two or three notes of this type. In several cases we have different names for folks as found in later histories of Polk County - don't know which book is correct - so did NOT add notes for those! Women have different maiden names, and children are listed in this book by names not appearing in newer books or the census records (although initials suggest they are using middle names in these bios).Cemetery records of Polk County "suggest" some children that died young
are not named in the 1899 bios. Some bios have an additional paragraph with brief bio of a family member - the brother of the landowner, or the eldest son may appear in that fashion.Bios related to NE locations -
Bio for Schuyler Colfax on p 139
Bio for General Kearney on p 210
