EARLY HISTORY OF CHERRY COUNTY, NEBRASKA

FOREWORD

This little book is lovingly dedicated:

     To the pioneers of Cherry County who have come ever the long, hard trail with me from the pioneer conditions to this wonderful time in which we now live, many of whom have passed away but continue to live on in our memory;

     To those who have seen the freight wagons drawn by oxen give way to rail, truck and air transportation;

     To those who have seen the country 'round about change from the open range to modern well-kept farms and ranches;

     To those who have seen our county seat develop from a small frontier village to a modern city with paved streets, electric lights and various modern conveniences;

     To those who have changed from a bare existence with twisted hay, cowchips, freight wagons and sod houses to substantial homes using coal, oil and bottled gas and with modern trucks and automobiles for transportation;

     To the sons, daughters and grandchildren of these pioneers who are privileged to inherit the advantages of the county we all love more than any other. We earnestly hope and trust you will keep alive the spirit of "The Old West" with its hospitality and ever-ready hand extended to help in time of need and to ennoble and bless the generations of the future.
