HONOR ROLL


(37) Before hospitals were built and before we had registered nurses, automobiles and well travelled roads to the towns and villages, each community cared for its own sick. There were women in each community who were endowed by nature or training, or both, who stood ready to go to the home of a neighbor and render aid when sickness came. These noble women travelled by wagon, sled, buggy and sometimes by horseback, in storm, or shine, by day or night. They went with no thought of making a charge for their services; their only thought was to bring relief in time of need. Many lives were saved through their kind ministry. These outstanding women deserve to have their names engraved on the pages of our history, and we give you their names herewith:

     The pioneer dentists were Dr. John Nicholson and Dr. H. Daily.

     (38) Pioneer physicians of the county were: Dr. J. C. Dwyer, located in Valentine in the 80s; Dr. Alfred Lewis came to Valentine in 1883; Dr. J. B. Hollinger located on Snake River; Dr. A. J. Plumer settled on a ranch north of Hyannis; Dr. A. N. Compton located in Valentine in July, 1898; Dr. Ed Julian, Dr. Mary Baker, Dr. Mrs. George Sawyer, and Dr. Brahmstead of Wood Lake.

     Dr. B. F. Felch of Simeon and Dr. N. B. Ray of Valentine did not engage in practice.

     Prior to 1908 when automobiles came into use, pioneer doctors travelled by saddle horse or team and were often called upon to make trips of many miles.

     Until hospitals and registered nurses were available, the physicians depended largely upon local women to do the nursing.
