EARLY HISTORY OF CHERRY COUNTY, NEBRASKA

     Each September morning for thirty years, the writer has stood before groups of boys and girls such as you and looked into their eager faces, seeing the possibility of helping them become the kind of men and women they should become in order to take their places in the plans and works of the world.

     The purpose of this book is to help you learn those things about Cherry County which you should know. We trust the book will give you pleasure as well as information concerning the great and good things which your parents, grand parents, and great grand parents have done in order that you might have the fine conditions, surroundings and opportunities that you now enjoy. Furthermore, we want this book to help you be thankful for these great blessings and appreciative of your pioneer ancestors and imitative of their finest traits of character.

     Do you realize that the history which will be added to this book years from now will have been made by the boys and girls of today and you too, will have a part in making that history ?

     Your ancestors have made material progress. You will have improved machinery, modern conveniences, and easy transportation to lighten your labors, but be sure that you too, will have battles to fight! Your battle is going to be for the happiness and peace of all races of people in every nation under the sun.

     Your problem will be to help every person to know that all men must live together as brothers; that all men must have equal chances to earn an honest living, equal chances to get an education, to make a fair profit on their labors, and that all must have a voice in the government and a right to a fair trial by jury; that all must have some kind of old age assistance, and a right to free speech and free worship.

     Can you young people be fair and square and follow the golden rule in all of your dealings with other people? Can you bring joy and gladness to those with whom you come in contact through life? If you begin to practice that kind of living now, and all other boys and girls will do likewise, you can help bring this sad unhappy world to a place where people will live right; where they will help instead of hinder fellow-men and they will settle differences by peaceful means instead of war.

     That boys and girls is the big task which awaits you! Success to you!
