EARLY HISTORY OF CHERRY COUNTY, NEBRASKA

|
THE CALL OF THE WEST |
| If I were away -- away out west, Away from the toil, the grime and the heat Of busy office and crowded street, Away from the jostling, hurry throngs, And clamorings of rights and wrongs, I'd make of my life the very best. If I were away in the boundless west, Where the long grass waves and the soft winds blow, As they come over mountains all capped with snow, I'd think grand thoughts and the things I'd do Would all be noble and good and true, Way out in the care free west. Oh, land of the west, with your freedom from strife, As a siren you beckon, and promise me life, Such life as I've dreamed of and longed to enjoy, Where I'd drop all my cares and again be a boy. To the "Call of the West" I will harken and go, Some day, where the bunchgrass and wild roses grow, Where the coyote howls shrill through the echoing hills, Where life is worth living with all of its ills, To the spot that fond nature so richly has blest The hills and the vales of Nebraska--the West. |
