Introductory The readiness with which the contributors responded to our call for aid in publishing this book compels us to express our gratefulness. We were unaware of the great sympathy felt for our cause and each contributor may feel assured that he has made possible the publication of the handsomest Police Souvenir ever published in the West, and that the amount will add materially to the Relief Fund, which is utilized for the relief of families that have come to need through the death or disability of the breadwinners whose lives have been spent in the public service. The compiler has used every possible effort in making this book reliable and complete, and is indeed grateful to all who have aided him. Many people are under the impression that the Police Relief Fund is maintained by taxation upon our citizens. This belief is wrong. The fund is kept alive through donations and the proceeds from sales of confiscated property. The citizens of Omaha are taxed for the maintenance of the Police Department proper, but there are no taxes levied for the Relief Fund. As has been said: All heroes do not die upon the field of battle." The noble men of our department daily offer up their lives in sacrifice to Law, Order and the protection of property belonging to our citizens, while those dear ones who survive, are dependant upon the Police Relief Fund. Is it not worthy for this reason?" Gratefully Yours, by
Omaha Police Department, Chief of Police and Omaha Police Relief
Association, President. |
