Elected to the 76th Congress as a member of the House of Representatives and re-elected for seven successive terms: appointed to the United States Senate on January 1, 1955, began full 6-year term in the Senate on January 3, 1955, having been elected on November 2, 1954. Re-elected to the United States Senate in 1960 and 1960. Member of the Senate Committees on Finance, Rules and Administration, Government Operations, Aeronautical and Space Sciences, and Joint Atomic Energy.

Elected to the United States House of Representatives November 8, 1966.
