naval, land and air forces, but not to establish a single chief of staff over the armed forces nor an overall armed forces general staff.
The National Security Act of 1947 has been amended several times since its original enactment. The Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1958, approved August 6, 1958, further clarified and strengthened the direction, authority, and control of the Secretary of Defense over the Department of Defense, particularly providing increased control in the fields of research and engineering, and strengthening the operational direction of the combatant forces. It established a position of Director of Defense Research and Engineering, and reduced the number of Assistant Secretaries of Defense from nine to seven. Also, the relationships between the office of the Secretary of Defense and the military departments were clarified and the organization and duties of the Joint Staff were more clearly defined.
The Department of Defense includes the Secretary of Defense, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the office of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff which provide immediate staff assistance and advice to the Secretary of Defense, the military departments and the military services within those departments, the unified and specified commands, the National Security Agency, the Defense Atomic Support Agency, the Defense Communications Agency, the Defense Contract Audit Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Defense Supply Agency and such other agencies as the Secretary of Defense establishes to meet specific requirements.
Stanley R. Resor, Secretary of the Army, Washington, D. C.

of the President's Cabinet, but not the head of a department, the office of Attorney General was created September 24, 1789. The department is charged with the responsibility of enforcing the federal laws. In this connection it conducts all suits in the Supreme Court in which the United States is concerned, supervises the federal penal institutions, and investigates and detects violations against federal laws. The Attorney General supervises and directs the activities of the United States Attorneys and Marshals in the various judicial districts. Two of the agencies of the department maintain offices within Nebraska.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is the investigative division of the United States Department of Justice and as such is charged with the duty of investigating violations of the laws of the United States and collecting evidence in cases in which the United States is or may be a party in interest. Exceptions to this general jurisdiction are federal violations specifically assigned to some other federal investigative agency, such as counterfeiting, custom violations, narcotics, postal violations, and internal revenue matters.
Paul C. Young, Special Agent in Charge, Field Office, 1010 Federal Office Building, Omaha 68102.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service supervises naturalization work and administers the immigration laws.
