NEBRASKA
GENERAL HISTORY SELECTIONS

New Laws on Sedition, Sabotage &
Home Guards

Passed at Special Session of NE Legislature, March 26 to Apr 8, 1918. Another great selection by Ted & Carole. They say "No genealogy material - more like "historical background".

NE laws to deal with emergency of WW I.

semi Centennial History of Nebraska

By A. E. Sheldon. Published in 1904. The best transcribers the library has Ted & Carole Miller have stated that this book has the worst Table of Contents yet seen! Carole says "And we say so - right on the page (grin)" This is a book that for most part there is brief county history and a couple bios, perhaps with photos.

There are some short articles about state institutions. This book is an easy read, but slips from one subject to another in more or less chronological order with some "time jumps" every now and again.

D. A. R. Proceedings of
28th Annual Conference, 1930

Daughters of the American Revolution book that includes list of books they owned. Ted & Carole Miller have added a Table of Contents (for navigation purposes) and every name index.

"To Nebraska in '57,
A Diary of Erastus. F. Beadle"

Ted & Carole Miller say this is a fascinating read by a man that left Buffalo, NY to work in vicinity of Omaha, NE in 1857. They recommend reading the whole thing for overview of the times. I have also listed this book under Douglas County.

Nebraska Facts

Ted & Carole's (guess-timate published 1918) by Dept of Publicity, Lincoln, NE Includes 80 pages inviting folks to move to Nebraska. Info on various types of farming, schools, manufacturing, newspapers, hydro-electric development, fish & game, etc. Photos of assorted institutions, cattle shows ... Everyname index for about 40 people, added.

In the Early Days Along the Overland Trail in Nebraska Territory, in 1852
by Gilbert L. Cole in 1905
compiled by Mrs. Hardy, 1905.

I know that I would not have had the courage to complete this journey, from the encounters with what nature can throw at the pioneers to the Indians with an all name index by Pam Rietsch that's hardly worth mentioning (grin). I have also placed this book under the Pioneer Selection category also.

"Overland Stage to California"
1901 by F. A. Root and Wm. Connelley -

Frank Root was messenger on stagecoach line and early employee of the US postal service. Material related to KS, CO & NE, includes information on Overland drivers, messengers & station keepers. PONY EXPRESS chapter. Photos & biographical information for some people who are difficult to trace. Original index included. Transcribed by Ted & Carole Miller.

When I first put this on line 10 years ago, all I was able to do was to scan the pages. This time I opened up each image and brightened & brought the shadows out of each of the 4 portraits on a page. I think now instead of numerous dark images, there are very few that you cannot see the face. I hope you enjoy.

A Pictorial Album of 1220 individuals who made Nebraska Great! There are also a few lines of history regarding each photo. Perhaps your family member is there. Complete with an all name index by Pam Rietsch

History of Nebraska
(from the Earliest Explorations of the Trans Mississippi Region ...)

J. Sterling Morton & Albert Watkins.

Revised Edition by Augustus O. Thomas, James A. Beattie, Arthur C. Wakely. 1918. Western Pub. and Engraving Co., Lincoln, NE.

[NOTE: I had two copies of this book which I sent to my transcription friends during production. ONE copy had a section about religious groups in NE inserted as Chapter XXXIV. This is the edition that was reproduced. They randomly compared pages, and found no differences in these two books other than the addition of that chapter, and the appropriate entries in the Index.]

Produced with the book's own index; a list of photographs added. Check for political skullduggery (nothing new!), general state history, history of assorted religious groups and colleges. Hope you find your ancestors.

"History of Western Nebraska and Its People Vol. III"
1921, Editor-in-chief Grant L. Shumway

NAME INDEX and PHOTO index available. (Entire book is biographies - residents of the Nebraska Panhandle. There is no table of contents. This book has a tremendous number of typos, lots of flowery phrases! Read about your ancestors and their neighbors as well. All the articles are about "intelligent, sturdy, thrifty, reliable, far-seeing, hardworking, resourceful, persistent" people .... - Nebraska pioneers!)  Another great transcription by Ted & Carole Miller

The Trail of the Loup, being a History of the Loup River Region

1906 by H. W. Fought.

This book is 296 pages of great stories, history and adventure during the early 1850's to the early turn of the century in 1900 in the Loup River Valley, Nebraska. This included the North Loup River, the Middle Loup River and the Lower Loup River Regions...stories from blizzards to locusts, to Indian clashes, to the rough struggles of early towns. I have also copied this book into the Garfield, Greeley, Loup, & Valley county pages.

The first 3 or 4 chapters are kinda dry, all about the actual forming of the land in and around Nebraska and how it formed through the dinosaur age etc. To know that Nebraska was underwater, not once but twice I found fascinating.

There are marvelous pictures in this book...and tons of early biographies. Complete with an all name index by Pam Rietsch

"Hand Book for Nebraska Citizens"
Grace M. Wheeler, 1919

Lessons: Outlines for government and institutions of the state. Reproduced with handwritten notes of previous owner. Transcribed by Ted & Carole Miller, great friends of the Memorial Library.

Everyname index completed! (T&C)

HELL IN NEBRASKA

A tale of the Nebraska Penitentiary in the year by Walter Wilson. Published by Bankers Publishing. A book written for a purpose. Deals mostly with sin in high places. Written by a sinner for sinners to read. If you have not committed at least one sin in your life you will not be permitted to buy one of these books. Not a sermon by a long ways, yet it may serve as a text for one. Our artists are preparing a set of illustrations, the like of which you never saw before, illustrations that are extremely superb-oh, so rich! Our attorneys are looking it over. There will be no collision with the federal mail inspectors.

Another great transcription of my books by Ted & Carole Miller for the Mardos Memorial Library.
