THE SANDUSKY, 1837

     

    

     This engine was the first one built by the firm of Rogers, Ketchum and Grosvenor of Paterson, N. J. and was tried on Oct. 6th 1837 between Paterson and Jersey City and was bought by the President of the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad and arrived at Sandusky Nov 17, 1837, at which time, not a foot of track had been laid. It was used in the construction of the road until April 11, 1838, when it began making regular trips in passenger service.

     Cylinders 11" dia. by 16" stroke, drivers 4'6" dia. truck wheels 30" dia.

     Driving wheels with hollow spokes and rims were first used on this engine and the counterbalancing of same first introduced.
