ROSS WINANS COAL BURNING ENGINE 1844 TO 1854

These engines were built by Ross Winans of Baltimore Md. and were the prevailing class employed on the Balto. & Ohio R. R. and on the Reading Railroad, up to within a quite recent period for freight service.

As early as 1844 these engines had taken the form shown above, the object being to get great tractive force at a slow speed, and for this reason large cylinders and small driving wheels were used - the cylinders being 17" dia. and 22" stroke and the wheels 46" diameter.

The driving wheels were cast iron with chilled rims, the front and back pairs only being flanged.

The firebox was 84" long and 42" wide presenting 24½ sq. ft. of grate surface, and had not only doors at back, but a self feeding hopper on top. The weight of these engines was 54,200 lbs. in working order.
