THE LIGHTNING OF 1849

     

    

     This engine was built at Schenectady, N. Y. by the Norris Locomotive Works, when located at that place for the Syracuse and Utica Railroad and made her first trip in December, 1849.

     Her fastest record was 16 miles and 88 feet in 13 minutes and 21 seconds hauling 8 eight wheel cars.

     Cylinders 16" x 22" drivers 84" dia. carrying wheels 48" dia. and front truck wheels 42" dia. All these wheels were solid forgings, the first of their kind ever made in America.

     Boiler 42" dia. 116 - 2" tubes 10'3" long, firebox 54" long 36" wide 54" deep waterspace 3.

     The Gooch Link was used and the gear arranged to cut off at any point from 1/8 to 7/8 of the stroke. Engine weighed 20 tons.

     The load on the drivers could be varied by changing the fulcrum pin between the equalizer and the frame. The extra notches are shown in the equalizer and frame through the driving wheel.
