ROGERS, KETCHUM AND GROSVENORS' TEN WHEELED ENGINE 1848

     

    

     This cut shows the class of freight engines used at this period on the New York and Erie Railroad, the gauge of which was six feet.

     They were built by Rogers, Ketchum and Grosvenor of Paterson, New Jersey. They had six coupled 5 ft. wheels and a bogie truck, cylinders 18" dia. 20" stroke, weight of engine 30 tons, grate surface14.67 sq. ft. heating surface in firebox 72 sq. ft. 198 tubes 13 ft. long 1¾" dia. presenting a heating surface of 1127 sq. ft.

     The form of crank axle known as the "half crank" by Baldwin, was extensively used on this class of engine.
