GREAT WESTERN EXPRESS ENGINE, 1851

     

    

     This cut shows the standard express engines used on the Great Western Railway of England at this period.

     The dimensions are as follows--

     Cylinders 18"x24" 8 ft. driving wheels, boiler 4'6" diameter, 305 tubes 2" dia. 11'3" long gauge of track 7 feet.

     They present no unusual features of design, other than their great size.
