BRISTOL AND EXETER ENGINE, 1853

     

    

     The large tank engines were built by Rothwell and Co. of Bolton-le-Moors for the Bristol and Exeter Railway of 7 ft. gauge of track.

     They had 16½" cyls, 24" stroke, driving wheels 9 ft. in diameter and two trucks of 4 wheels each, these wheels being 4 ft. dia.

     The boiler was 48½" dia. with 180 tubes 1 15/16" dia. the barrel being 10'9" long. The drivers had no flanges, India rubber springs were applied under all the axel bearings, weight of engine loaded, 42 tons.

     These engines are reported to have run at the rate of 80 miles per hour.
