RAMSBOTTOM'S SELF FILLING TENDER 1860

This method of filling tenders of locomotives with water, while the train is in rapid motion was perfected and adopted by Mr. Ramsbottom, Mechl. Supt. of the London and North Western Railway in 1860.

At Conway on this line he had a pair of cast iron troughs put down 441 yards long with a further length at each end of 16 yards rising 1 in 100. They were 18" wide and 8" deep and were placed one between the rails of each line and so that the water 5" deep stood at about the level of the rails.

The scoop was 10" wide at the mouth and dipped 2" under the surface of the water.
