HASWELL'S FOUR CYLINDER LOCOMOTIVE
 1861

This engine was made by Mr. John Haswell of the Austrian State Railway Works at Vienna and exhibited in the International Exhibition of 1862.

This engine was designed to run with the utmost steadiness at high speeds and for this purpose two cylinders with their working parts were provided for each driving wheel and by connecting the pistons to crank pins diametrically opposite to each other the whole momentum of each set of reciprocating parts was balanced by that of the other set.
