A SHAY LOCOMOTIVE 1895

These engines are built by the Lima Locomotive and Machine Works and the object in building them in the manner shown is to have the shortest possible rigid wheel base and the longest possible wheel base, thus utilizing all the weight for traction and it is possible to work the engine on very short curves, the one illustrated running easily on 65° curves.

Its use is confined to roads having heavy grades and sharp curves and restricted to slow speeds.

The engine has three cylinders 14½" dia. and 12" stroke; total weight of engine in working order 156,000 lbs; number of drivers 12. About 500 of these locomotives are in service in the United States, Canada and South America.
